Safeguarding against harm in climate smart forestry

Environmental and social safeguards to prevent harm and encourage benefits of forestry.

Climate-smart forestry aims to balance carbon benefits with ecological and social responsibility. This resource sets out key principles to prevent harm when sourcing timber for construction, ensuring that climate goals do not compromise biodiversity, community rights, or long-term forest health.

 

Safeguards in the context of forest management are measures taken to prevent harm and encourage benefit by continually assessing, monitoring, and, where possible, improving the social and environmental impacts of interventions relative to the baseline scenario. They help to both constrain and enable, as appropriate, the design, function, and implementation of climate smart forest economy programs and projects.

Safeguarding Against Harm has been produced by the Climate Smart Forest Economy Program and supported by Michigan State University. It resulted from an analysis of existing safeguards tools, and led to the development of a checklist to apply the most relevant elements of these tools to climate smart forest economy initiatives.
