United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, we are driving the shift to a built environment in harmony with nature. The UK is a European frontrunner in biobased construction, a market defined by cutting-edge innovation, strong policy frameworks, and pioneering projects. This leadership creates the perfect conditions to scale timber and other nature-based materials across the sector.

Our goal
Our UK network aims to accelerate the uptake of timber and other biobased materials in construction by building a strong national network of frontrunners. The network will focus on multi-storey timber construction, closing knowledge gaps, and showcasing exemplary projects, while driving collaboration across sectors to shape policy, develop technical solutions, and foster innovation for a climate-neutral built environment.
Biobased in the UK: State of the Market
The UK is setting the pace for biobased construction, with timber and CLT moving from niche to mainstream. Ambitious architects, progressive regulations, and a strong sustainability agenda have created fertile ground for innovation, delivering standout projects from schools and housing to offices and cultural landmarks. These buildings prove that biobased materials can slash carbon, speed up delivery, and create healthier, more beautiful spaces. Challenges like fire safety perceptions and insurance hurdles are being tackled head-on through rigorous testing, certification, and industry collaboration. With growing demand for low-carbon solutions and a track record of success, the UK market is primed for rapid expansion and global leadership in biobased design.
Network Activities
The UK Network creates spaces for collaboration and learning through regular roundtables, knowledge-sharing webinars, and thematic sessions on overcoming industry barriers. Members can engage in policy discussions, contribute to strategic objectives, and access guidance for applying to the Built by Nature Fund. The network also showcases pioneering projects and connects frontrunners from across sectors—developers, architects, cities, and innovators, working together to scale timber and biobased construction in the UK.
