BbN funds ECOS’ work on timber standards

The transition to a low-carbon built environment requires robust standards and policies that support the use of sustainable, circular timber. Across Europe, ongoing revisions to construction legislation and timber product standards present a critical opportunity to embed climate-positive practices in the construction sector. However, current frameworks often fall short in enabling timber reuse, accurately measuring carbon impacts across the value chain, and preventing greenwashing.

Aim

This grant supports ECOS’ initiative to advance circular and low-carbon timber in EU and international standards. It focuses on improving conditions for timber reuse, strengthening carbon accounting methodologies, and helping Built by Nature networks apply new policies and standards.

Why we fund this

Aligned with Built by Nature’s strategy, the initiative focuses on policy, networks, and knowledge & innovation to accelerate the timber building transformation. It works across three main pillars: enabling the reuse of timber through improved European standards; reinforcing a robust ISO methodology to assess carbon dynamics across forestry and wood products; and supporting Built by Nature networks in understanding and applying emerging policies and standards.
