Durley Chine Environmental Hub

Footprint Architects. Bournemouth, United Kingdom

Community education finds a home in sustainable coastal infrastructure.

The 612 m², two-storey Durley Chine Environmental Hub sits on Bournemouth’s Blue Flag beach, funded by the Coastal Communities Fund. It houses a Passivhaus-certified education and welfare centre to tackle the challenge of sustainable coastal infrastructure by promoting environmental awareness among residents and visitors on the environmental impact of packaging and waste.

As a public amenity and learning resource, the Hub supports a broader goal of reducing the 2,000 tonnes of waste the local Council removes annually from its shoreline.
Built with modular timber framing, it incorporates 52 tonnes of reclaimed hardwood, recycled glass screed, newspaper insulation, and low-carbon concrete. Operating at net zero with solar PV, MVHR, and a biodiverse green roof, it serves as a unique example of sustainable coastal infrastructure development.
