Gutter House

Hybrid timber residence responsive to local environment, jobs and community.

Gutter House, a 373 m² hybrid timber residence and studio designed by its architect-owner, features two curving wooden forms joined by a central concrete gutter, reminiscent of an inverted boat.

The project addresses ecological sensitivity and local housing needs, embedding itself in the local fishing village with minimal land disturbance. Built collaboratively with local craftspeople and completed in 2022, it doubles as both a home and guesthouse.

Using locally sourced glulam, bamboo, clay, and stone the project minimises embodied carbon. Passive design features—double façades, ventilated roofs, rainwater harvesting—reduce energy demand and eliminate the need for air conditioning. Gutter House stores carbon in its 25 m³ of timber, supports local jobs, and serves to highlight circular, community-driven construction methodologies.
