InnoRenew CoE
InnoRenew CoE. Izola, Slovenia
Hybrid construction at the core of sustainable research facility.
Slovenia’s largest wooden building, this 6,833 m², five-storey facility houses nine laboratories, offices and event spaces – addressing the lack of sustainable research infrastructure while revitalising the town of Izola with jobs, training, and scientific collaboration. Beneficiaries include the city, researchers, and industry partners.
The hybrid CLT, concrete, and steel structure integrates REED principles, maximising wellbeing through daylight, timber interiors, and ergonomic design. Green roofs, solar water heating, and rainwater reuse enhance sustainability. Over 1,300 m³ of timber was used, with cladding treated by biobased coatings for durability.
By offsetting its carbon footprint with 3,000 oak trees, monitoring performance via sensors, and inspiring new wooden buildings in Slovenia, InnoRenew CoE establishes a blueprint for research architecture globally.
