Affordable housing development supports regional timber value chain.
This new-build residential development spans 6,600 m² across two floors, pioneering multi-storey timber housing in East Africa. Modular units adapt from studios to three-bedroom homes, arranged around a communal courtyard with gardens and shared amenities.
Designed to address Zanzibar’s growing demand for sustainable, inclusive housing, Moyoni supports multigenerational living and fosters community resilience.
The hybrid system combines FSC/PEFC-certified CLT floors imported from Germany with locally fabricated timber frame walls, ensuring efficiency, reduced waste, and carbon storage. Prefabrication shortened construction time and reduced resource use.
By demonstrating viability in reducing embodied carbon, creating jobs, and catalysing a timber value chain in East Africa, Moyoni can inspire scalable, climate-conscious housing worldwide.
