An active and highly engaged national network, Built by Nature is collaborating in the UK to address specific challenges around perceptions of mass timber – including insurability – while simultaneously promoting its environmental and wellbeing benefits.
As Amsterdam is the “home base” for Built by Nature, the country is well-represented by companies and organisations aligned with national and local governments’ goals and commitments to sustainable urban development.
Awareness of the "Built by Nature" project was heightened through the funding of a significant research initiative focused on perceived barriers to the adoption of mass timber in Italy. A physical and digital prototype was developed to enhance understanding and maximise the use of timber in the ambitious one-million-square-metre Milano Innovation District (MIND) complex. In this context, GBC Italia is going to play a pivotal role in building a network of private and public stakeholders in the timber industry, actively working to overcome the perceived challenges
Our presence in Spain was established with the launch of the Built by Nature-funded MASS MADERA network, at the “Mass is More” installation in Barcelona. Coordinated by IAAC (Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia) MASS MADERA includes cities, governments, companies, organizations and architects from across Spain promoting the development of mass timber construction, and the reduction of CO2 emissions associated with it.
