Built Environment LeadThe research and engagement initiative was coordinated by EIT Climate-KIC, the European Union’s largest climate innovation initiative accelerating the transition to a zero-carbon world. The project led to the production of a report on perceptions and the current state of the mass timber market in Italy, the set up of an online living lab for knowledge sharing, a series of engagement workshops with representatives of the construction industry, and the construction of a physical prototype (pictured) to drive understanding and adoption of mass timber locally. The project was anchored in and around the Milano Innovation District (MIND) complex. MIND is developed and built by multinational property and construction company Lendlease.
Waugh Thistleton Architects designed the prototype, with other industry players University College London, Arup and Stora Enso providing expertise and/or in-kind support throughout the project. Fondazione Politecnico di Milano conducted a review of scientific literature on mass timber sustainability implications in the Italian market.
